Little Switzerland received its name from early summer residents of the area who thought the scenery resembled that of the Swiss Alps. Native Americans first inhabited McDowell some 6,000 years ago.

Scottish and Irish settlers came in the early 1700s. The area was known for its gold production between 1804-1827.
McDowell County was formally established in 1843 and named after Joseph McDowell, a Revolutionary War leader.
Mitchell County was formed at the start of the Civil War, and until 1911 encompassed most of present-day Avery County. Mitchell County is also known for its rich trove of gems and minerals.
