Yancey County
 Known as the “Gateway to Mount
Mitchell,” Yancey County NC was carved out
of Buncombe and Burke Counties in 1833.
Yancey County is located in the Appalachian

Mitchell County
Like Yancey County, Mitchell County was
formed from parts of the neighboring
counties in 1861. Mitchell County NC was
named after Elisha Mitchell, a renowned UNC
professor who first documented Mount
Mitchell’s height, thus giving the mountain
its namesake. Elisha was a professor of
mathematics, chemistry, geology and
mineralogy and was first to argue that Mount
Mitchell was the highest point east of the
Mississippi. Mitchell County today is a thriving community with two towns, Spruce Pine, NC and Bakersville, NC.
 Want
to get away from the everyday stresses of
suburban life? Spruce Pine North Carolina is
an escape from the ordinary amidst tranquil
relaxation, abundant arts and culture and
spectacular scenery. Spruce Pine has a
population of just over 2,000 and is located
8 miles north of
Little
Switzerland NC, which straddles the
McDowell and Mitchell
County lines. This tiny gem of a community
is the Christmas Tree Capital of the World

America. Historically, Spruce Pine has
